About the Role

Help4Homeless is launching a vital Homeless Helpline service for Peterborough, providing emergency support, advice, and signposting for people experiencing homelessness, at risk of homelessness, or in crisis situations. As a Helpline Volunteer, you'll be the first point of contact for vulnerable individuals seeking help, offering compassionate support, practical advice, and connecting them to essential services. This is a unique opportunity to make a life-changing impact from the comfort of your home.

Every day, people in Peterborough face homelessness, eviction, or housing crisis. Our helpline will be their lifeline - providing immediate support when they need it most. As a volunteer, you'll be the calm, reassuring voice that helps someone find shelter, access food, or connect with services that can change their life trajectory.

What You'll Do

  • Answer incoming calls from people experiencing homelessness or crisis
  • Provide emotional support and active listening in difficult situations
  • Assess immediate needs and safety concerns
  • Provide information about emergency accommodation, food services, and support
  • Signpost to local services including shelters, healthcare, and benefits support
  • Maintain accurate records of calls and follow-up actions
  • Escalate urgent cases to senior staff or emergency services when needed
  • Follow up with callers to ensure they received appropriate support
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times
  • Participate in regular team meetings and ongoing training sessions

  • Age 18 or older
  • Enhanced DBS check (we process)
  • Fluent English communication
  • Quiet space & reliable internet
  • Basic computer/smartphone skills

Training & Support

Full comprehensive training provided - No prior experience necessary! Our intensive 4-week training program includes:

🎯 Core Skills Training

  • Crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques
  • Active listening and empathy building
  • Mental health first aid awareness

📋 Systems & Knowledge

  • Peterborough housing & support services directory
  • Safeguarding and confidentiality protocols
  • Call handling systems and documentation

📅 Training Schedule: August 2026, 2 evenings per week + Saturday sessions. 📜 Certificate: Helpline Support Certification upon completion.

Time Commitment & Schedule

📅 Initial Training Period

  • August 2026: 4-week intensive training
  • 2 evenings per week: 6:30pm - 8:30pm
  • Saturday sessions: 10:00am - 1:00pm

⏰ Ongoing Volunteer Shifts

  • 4-8 hours per week commitment
  • 2-4 shifts weekly of 2-4 hours each
  • Flexible scheduling around your commitments

🏠 Remote Requirements: Quiet private space, reliable internet, computer/smartphone, and headphones. 📱 Technology: We provide all necessary software and training on our call management system.
